Penelope Cruz Sanchez
Penelope Cruz Sanchez was born in Madrid
to Eduardo Cruz, a retailer, and Encarna Sanchez, a hairdresser. As a toddler,
she was already a voracious performer, re-enacting TV commercials for her
family's entertainment, but she eventually decided to concentrate on dancing.
After studying classical ballet for nine years in the Spanish National
Conservatory, she continued her training under a series of highly acclaimed
dancers. When she turned 15 she realized her real purpose when she beat more
than 300 other girls at an audition by a talent agency. The contract she got
secured her roles in Spanish television programs as well as music videos. It
opened opportunities for a successful career on the big screen. Cruz was first
seen in a movie with The Greek Labyrinth (1993). (The Greek Labyrinth).
Following that, she appeared briefly in Framed (1992) by Timothy Dalton. The
third film she starred in was an Oscar-winning film, Belle Epoque (1992), where
she played one of the four sisters fighting to win the heart of a handsome army
deserter. The film also won numerous Goyas in Spain, which is the Spanish
equivalent of the Academy Awards. Her film resume continued to expand by three
or four films each year. Soon Cruz was a leading lady in Spanish cinema. Live Flesh
(1997) (Live Flesh) offered her the chance to work with renowned Spanish
director Pedro Almodovar (who would later be her ticket to international fame),
and the same year she was the lead actress in the thriller/drama/mystery/sci-fi
film Open Your Eyes (1997), a huge hit in Spain that earned eight Goyas (though
none for Cruz). Her luck changed completely in 1998 when the film industry
comedy La Nina De Tus Ojos (1998) was awarded the Best Actress Goya. Cruz had a
few more appearances in English-language films but her first big international
success was the film of Almodovar All About My Mother (1999) in which she
played an unchaste but very well-meaning nun. Cruz became in high demand across
both sides of the Atlantic since her film won so many awards and accolades. The
next major film she worked on was Woman on Top (2000) A comedy from the United
States. American comedy about a cook with a captivating culinary skill and a
